Fishing Report for June 2010
Marks 29.5" Walleye |
Walleye was pretty good fishing till the may fly hatch arrived then it was tougher during the day fishing for them in the clear water lakes as they stuffed themselves on this abundance of insect food. After the hatch was done walleye fishing began to pick up. Leeches seemed to be their bait of choice at the time, with a chartreuse jig being the best color. Congratulations to Mark for catching, picturing and releasing his personal best, a 29.5" lunker Walleye.
Clay with Bass on fly rod |
Bass were on their beds for a good part of June and now have gone back out deep. Congratulations is in order for Clay and Greg from Wyoming for catching their first Canadian smallmouth on their fly fishing gear. They gave me a quick lesson on how to use a fly-rod and hmmm,,,pretty
neat stuff,,might be a new sport for me to get into. It has got to be
one of the best fights you can get on a fly rod as they are such vigorous fighters.

Tommy with a fat Northern Pike from Dash lake |
Northern Pike fishing was good with several of our guests catching some nice pike. congratulations to Tommy from Wyoming who caught a really fat Northern Pike from one of our portage lakes - Dash lake.
44.5" release shot |
Muskie fishing began the 3rd Saturday in June. 1st week, lots of followers but could only close the deal on one 44.5" muskie in Slender lake(in the northern chain of lakes-about 5 min. from lodge). Had this girl up 3x before I could finally close the deal. She struck the bait boat side, on the top end of my Big-O and I was reeled up to just before the leader. It was a ferocious fight and even a leap out of the water and into the air beside the boat. Adrenalin pumping action for sure! Special thanks to John from Florida who helped net her.
Greg with his 1st muskie |
Congratulations to Greg and Clay for catching their first Canadian shield muskies. We caught Greg's muskie trolling in one of my secret neck down points with the deep basin of the lake just off of it.
a beautifull 50" muskie from Clearwater lake |
Only a few days later and fishing with Jack Penny, I catch a giant 50" muskie in only 5-6' of water. My bait was bangin the bottom and then all of a sudden, BAM and the slow heavy head shake. I knew at once this one was big. She stayed down and refused to come up. Even with my 8 and a half foot rod, I could not leverage her to come up and steer her into the landing net. Reluctantly she slowly rose to the surface and we were able to net her quickly and safely. I was able to quickly get the hooks out of her without any injury. We gave her a couple minutes recoup time in the monster net while we readied for a few quick photos and then it was back into the water for the release. Jack snapped a few pictures as we

released her and as she readied herself to swim away we tried to notice any marks or old wounds that we might identify her with. And as we looked her over we noticed she had an old injury to her right pectoral fin that left it split and not webbed like her left fin. If you look closely you will see in the release shot what I mean.
There were many more stories and pictures but I'd have to say it was a great month for fishing, we had many personal bests and some great catch and releases. Definitely some excellent memories I'll never forget (eh? Galen, Torry, Jeff & Darroll)
Be watching for next months fishing report. Already we have had a great start to july. Watch for the story about the 50" muskie we now caught twice.
Keep your lures in the water!
