Crappie are not a natural species to Ontario's lakes. They have been slowly making their way north from the southern states since the late 70s and are now in Ontario waters. So far they have not caused any environmental damage and have not affected other fish populations so they are being treated as a resource instead of an unwelcome and evasive pest.
Many people love the taste of Crappie and in Ontario's lakes, the Crappie have found a perfect environment to not only proliferate in great numbers but grow big. There are lots of times when guests think they have a nice size bass on their line only to find out it's a big Ontario Crappie. The limit is 15 with a sports license so they are a good way to bring fish home for the big fish fry.
With Crappie being a schooling fish, it can make for some really fun fishing as once you get into them the action can be non stop when the bites on. Sizes can vary from 12-15 inches with many even getting as big as 18 inches.
